Late starters
Always wanted to play? It's never too late. We start with breathing, making a good sound and reading simple music, and build from there.
Returning players
Played at school and the flute's been in the loft ever since? It comes back quicker than you'd think. Lessons are flexible: no set syllabus, just the music you want to play.
Developing players
Already playing and want to improve tone, technique and repertoire, work towards Trinity College London graded exams, or get ready to join a band or ensemble.
How lessons work
Playing the flute takes more breath and stamina than most people expect, so lesson length grows with you.
-
30 minutes
Beginners
Short, focused lessons are best at the start. Enough time to work on posture, breathing and tone without tiring your lip or your concentration.
-
45 minutes
Building up
A stepping stone once you're playing regularly and want a little more time for pieces, scales and studies.
-
60 minutes
Intermediate & advanced
Once your stamina has built up, a full hour gives room for technique, repertoire, musicianship and exam preparation.
Working towards grades
Students who'd like a clear structure can study for Trinity College London graded flute exams, with lessons planned around the syllabus: pieces, technical work, sight-reading and aural.
Learning more flexibly
Returning adults, and anyone who'd rather not sit exams, can learn in a more relaxed way, choosing music they enjoy and going at a pace that fits around the rest of life.

Questions people ask
I can't read music. Can I still learn?
Yes. Reading music is taught alongside playing from the very first lesson, a step at a time.
Am I too old to start?
No. Adults often progress quickly because they practise with purpose and know why they're there.
How much should I practise?
Little and often beats long and rare. Fifteen to twenty minutes most days will make a real difference, especially at the start.
Can I take graded exams?
Yes, if you'd like to. Carol prepares students for Trinity College London graded flute exams. They're entirely optional, and returning adults often prefer a more flexible approach without exams.
When are lessons available?
Weekday daytimes, some evenings and occasional weekends. Let Carol know what suits you in your enquiry.
